Sampheng Market — formally Soi Wanit 1, but known universally as Sampeng Lane — is one of the oldest continuously operating markets in Bangkok, and among the most historically important. Running parallel to and just south of Yaowarat Road in the heart of Chinatown, this covered alley has been a center of Chinese-Thai commerce since the 17th century, when the first wave of Chinese immigrants settled along these streets and built the trading networks that shaped the city's commercial identity. Today the lane is as active as ever: a long, narrow, partially covered corridor packed on both sides with tiny shops selling an extraordinary range of goods at prices that reflect its status as a wholesale rather than tourist market.

The selection is vast and loosely organized by category along the length of the lane. The western end, near Phahurat Road (Bangkok's Little India), is strong for fabrics, textiles, and embroidered items. Moving eastward, the stock shifts toward jewelry and accessories, cosmetics, stationery, hair ornaments, toys, craft supplies, and party decorations. More than 70 shoe shops cluster in the adjoining sois, making Sampeng one of the best places in Bangkok for wholesale women's footwear. Prices throughout are fixed rather than negotiable, and many vendors require minimum purchases of multiple units to access wholesale rates.

A visit is best undertaken in the morning before the heat builds and the narrow lanes fill with motorbikes and pushcarts. It pairs naturally with a late-afternoon or evening exploration of the Yaowarat Road food scene, which starts setting up as Sampeng winds down.

• Getting there: MRT Blue Line to Wat Mangkon Station, a few minutes' walk. The Chao Phraya Express Boat to Ratchawong Pier is a scenic alternative, about 5 minutes on foot.
• Hours: Daily, roughly 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This is a daytime market only — arrive early to beat the heat and peak crowds.
• Tip: Bring cash — most small vendors are cash-only. Prices are generally fixed, but buying in bulk often lowers the per-item cost. The lane gets very narrow and crowded after 11:00 AM.
