Walking Thalang Road: What Makes This Market Different

Thalang Road's Sunday transformation is often called both "Phuket Old Town Sunday Night Market Walking Street" and "Lard Yai" — two names for the same weekly event. What sets it apart from every other market on the island is the setting itself. Thalang Road isn't a purpose-built market venue — it's a living, 19th-century commercial street lined with shophouses in the distinctive Sino-Portuguese style that defines Old Phuket Town's character. The blend of Chinese merchant functionality and Portuguese colonial decoration produced facades of unusual beauty: arched colonnades, ceramic tile exteriors in ochre, sage, and deep red, ornate shuttered windows, and carved wooden details that have survived more than a century. When the road closes to traffic every Sunday at 4:00 PM, these buildings become the walls of what's effectively a roofless open-air gallery, with market stalls running down the center lane while the historic shophouse businesses stay open alongside them.

The walking-street format means the experience unfolds in a linear, unhurried way. Visitors walk the full length of Thalang Road — from the wooden Chinese gate at the eastern entrance to the far western end — then return along the other side, which has a noticeably different stall lineup. Branching off into Soi Rommanee and the smaller connecting alleys adds another layer most tourists skip entirely; it's in these side streets that some of the most atmospheric bars, the oldest shophouses, and the smallest craft vendors can be found. Done properly, the full walk takes two to three hours.

• Location: Thalang Road, Tambon Talat Yai — main entrance gate on the eastern (Phuket Road) side, in the heart of Old Phuket Town.
• Getting there: About 30–40 minutes from Patong Beach by Grab or taxi. Roads around Thalang Road start closing from mid-afternoon on Sundays — drop off on Dibuk Road or Phang Nga Road and walk to the entrance gate. Paid parking is available near Wat Mongkol Nimit temple on Dibuk Road.
• Hours: Sundays only, 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM.
• Tip: Arrive by 5:00 PM for good light for photos. Walk both sides of Thalang Road and explore the side alleys — comfortable shoes are essential, as the connecting alleys have uneven surfaces.
