Phuket Old Town's Iconic Sunday Street Market

Every Sunday evening, historic Thalang Road in the heart of Phuket Old Town closes to traffic and becomes something else entirely. Lard Yai Sunday Night Market — its name translating roughly from the southern Thai dialect as "big market street" — transforms this colonial-era corridor into one of the most atmospheric night markets in Thailand. The Sino-Portuguese shophouses lining both sides of the road, with their pastel facades and ornate arched walkways, provide a backdrop no purpose-built market can replicate. By 5:00 PM, fairy lights are strung overhead, live musicians take up positions along the street, and the first food vendors begin serving from stalls down the center lane.

The market extends along Thalang Road for several blocks and spills into Phangnga Road and the connecting side alleys — a detail many first-time visitors miss by sticking only to the main stretch. What they miss is often the best of it: the narrow Soi Rommanee in particular, where antique shophouses-turned-bars glow warmly and craft vendors set up under old lanterns. The food is strongly southern Thai in character — Phuket's own Hokkien noodles, dim sum, grilled squid with chili, kanom jeen rice noodles with curry, chicken satay, mango sticky rice, and the island's distinctive khanom luk chup desserts. A performance stage in the center of the road hosts Thai folk music, classical dance, and occasional karaoke competitions. Shopping leans toward original craft work rather than mass-produced souvenirs — hand-carved soap, batik clothing, beaded jewelry, and art prints by local painters sit alongside vintage items and handmade goods at genuinely fair prices.

• Getting there: About 30–35 minutes from Patong Beach by Grab or taxi. Thalang Road closes to vehicles from mid-afternoon on Sundays, so drop-off points are on the perimeter. Paid parking is available near Wat Mongkol Nimit temple on Dibuk Road, a short walk from the market entrance.
• Hours: Sundays only, 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Arrive by 5:00 PM to catch the market coming alive; peak crowds run 6:00–8:30 PM.
• Tip: Wear comfortable shoes — the street is long and the cobblestone side alleys are uneven. Don't limit yourself to Thalang Road; the connecting streets and Soi Rommanee are worth the detour.
